This is going to sound corny, but when I was eleven years old, I read “A Little Princess” and decided to be like Sara, the main character. She was kind to everyone and did the right thing in every situation, no matter what.
I distinctly remember the feeling, many times in my childhood, of doing the right thing, knowing I’d done the right thing, and being comforted by this fact, in the midst of craziness and cruelty. I could be always kind, and never retaliate or try to hurt anyone. I could have this one good and steady thing, unaffected by my family. No matter how they might tear me down, I could hold onto the secret knowledge that I was a good person.
When you have integrity, this means you do the right thing no matter what the people around you do, or do TO you.
When you always (or try to always) do the right thing, this means there are no dark corners in your soul.
When there are no dark corners in your soul, you can be filled with light.
