If we have spent a lifetime caring about our dysfunctional, self-absorbed parents and ignoring our own needs & emotions, it would be completely fair to stop worrying about them and just focus on our own happiness, RIGHT?
You know, sort of like, “It’s my turn now.”
Oooo! Wouldn’t that be a fun announcement!
“Dear Mum (or Dad) and family,
I have spent my entire life (___ years) focused on Mum’s happiness, and now it’s my turn.
For the next ____ years (same amount of time), I will be focusing on my own happiness.
Mum, since I have ignored my own happiness for this amount of time, and thought only about yours (often at great sacrifice), and you have mostly ignored my feelings while focusing on your own all this time, I think it’s only fair that you now ignore your own happiness and focus exclusively on mine for this same amount of time.
Thanks in advance, family, for understanding and being fair about this.
Love,
Me
P.S. You will receive a list of my needs and wishes anon.”
